Our showcase of Osano’s Women in Privacy continues with our third profile: Meet Skye McCullough, Chief Customer Officer at Osano. Learn more about Skye below; if you haven’t had a chance, also check out our profiles of Head of Privacy Rachael Ormiston and Senior Privacy Program Manager Ashley Fowler.

If you were able to attend our Women in Privacy Meetup on February 12, you may have seen and heard Skye McCullough taking part in the conversation. She’s hard to miss: In addition to having wealth of privacy knowledge that she shares readily with customers and Osanians alike, Skye is a joy to work with. Her passion, empathy, and curiosity shine through in everything she does.

Skye and the rest of the customer team are one of Osano’s greatest assets. In a world where help from an actual human can be hard to find, they strive to be true partners for our customers from implementation through the creation of a robust privacy program.

Learn more about Skye and her many interests in her answers to our burning questions. We look forward to seeing her epic historical privacy dramas some day at a theatre near us.

How did you get into privacy?

As a kid, I got the classic "stranger danger" talk about AOL Instant Messaging from my parents–back when the internet was becoming “a thing.” But honestly, I didn’t think too much about privacy until I got into the industry—then it was like, “Oh wow, this is everywhere.”

What inspires you most?

People who are unapologetically themselves and who are passionate about what they do or how they think—whether it’s privacy, art, science, brewing your own beer, or making your own bread—passion is contagious.

What would you do for a living if you weren’t doing this?

At different points in my life, I dreamed of being a big shot Hollywood producer or a Classics professor, but, realistically, I’d probably continue in tech with a focus on helping people. Or maybe I can just combine all my passing thoughts and make a wildly inaccurate historical drama about data privacy.

What do you wish more people knew about data privacy?

It’s in everything. It’s one of the most important things to protect, but it changes so fast that even those of us in the industry are constantly playing catch-up. It feels like tech is evolving so much faster than we are.

What career advice would you give to other women?

Invest in other women, invest in community, and always be learning. No one wins alone, and the strongest careers are built on lifting each other up.

When I’m not managing privacy, I...

I’m either traveling or wandering around my city with my dog trying new coffee shops or bakeries—a little bit of hometown tourism.

When I started my career, I wish I knew...

I hated this word in grad school, but networking is important. I hate to say it, but networking actually…works.

A typical day for me at Osano includes...

I spend my days working with our customer teams to make sure our customers have the best possible experience with our product and our team—because happy customers are the best kind.

I joined Osano because...

I believed in the mission and the team. Privacy is one of the biggest challenges of our time, and I wanted to be part of something where we actually make a difference rather than just talking about it. The team was a huge draw, too—smart, driven, and genuinely fun people.

My favorite thing about working at Osano is...

Broken record time: The people. They’re fun, supportive, and make work feel way less like work.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I can recite every English King and Queen in order from William the Conqueror to Charles III. Is it useful? NO!  But it’s the ultimate party trick that no one asked for.
