We’re eager to hear from you
Published: July 18, 2024
Hello all, and happy Thursday!
If you’ve been tuned into the news on AI regulation, you’re probably sick and tired of hearing about the EU AI Act. After all, the act was introduced way back in 2021, and I, for one, have been reading an endless stream of headlines as the act progressed through the EU’s somewhat byzantine legislative process.
If that’s true for you too, then you can rest easy knowing that the EU AI Act is officially set to enter into force on August 1st. We're not done hearing about the act yet, though. The law has a set of staggered milestones and deadlines associated with its various requirements (you can learn more in our blog, What Is the EU AI Act? A Comprehensive Overview).
There’s good reason why the act has made so many headlines, however. Some have characterized it as a GDPR for AI, and if the EU AI Act has even half the impact the GDPR did, it will be well worth paying attention as the act is implemented and enforced.
Best,
Arlo
P.S. (Not so) coincidentally, we’ve also released a new template in the Osano Platform to support organizations that need to meet AI regulations’ assessment requirements. Check out our product release post here, or scroll down to learn more.
Among the 40 bills announced during the King’s Speech, King Charles III described Keir Starmer’s plans for cybersecurity and data privacy legislation. A new Cyber Security and Resilience Bill will be introduced to expand regulation to cover more digital services and supply chains, empower regulators to ensure cybersecurity measures and mandate increased incident reporting to improve the government’s response to cyberattacks.
The Cybersecurity Administrative Sanctions Decree (CAS) was unveiled in mid-May and will regulate how both Vietnamese and foreign organizations handle personal data. While the CAS was meant to enter into effect as of June 1, there has been some delay, and a new timeline has not been announced.
The California legislature is proposing a 7.25% tax on data extraction transactions in the state. If enacted, the bill would target businesses that monetize data extracted from users (e.g., social media companies, large search engines, online retailers, etc.). In essence, this bill would target organizations that sell user information or provide access to users to advertisers.
The EU AI Act enters into force August 1, 2024; however, there is a long timeline ahead during which different requirements will come into effect at different times. The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) has provided this resource which shows some of the most important dates and milestones for the future implementation of the AI Act.
Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) has published a new report focusing on the pervasiveness of dark patterns. Notably, the report highlights high rates of dark patterns on children’s websites and apps.
AI and data privacy go together like cookies and cream—which is why Osano now offers an AI assessment template that can help you comply with the EU AI Act and other AI regulations’ assessment requirements. Click the link below to learn everything you need to know.
